Some old inscriptions on title and on a few other pages, some marginal 'pointing fingers' and a few small stains. Old bottom edge title. In all a quite decent copy.

Bewick. London, S. Hodgson, Emerson Charnley, Baldwin, Cradock & Joy, 1820. 21 x 15 cm. 19th cent. full polished calf with gilt and blindstamped borders, spine gilt and with two morocco title tickets. All edges marbled, matching with endpapers. (6), xl, 332 pp. Some traces of use: spine has lost part of its gold, most protruding parts a bit rubbed, some markings on the binding, a few spots and fingering inside, but an attractive book with a wood engraving on almost every page.

* De Haan's second, decadentistic
novel, even more openly homo-erotic than his first one, Pijpelijntjes,
describes a sometimes sadomasochistic relation between an artist and
a student. With a preface by Georges Eekhoud, translated by De Haan.
The first part bears a motto by Catullus dedicated to Eekhoud, the second
a motto by Olindo Guerrini to Herman Bang, and the third one by Catullus
dedicated to Oscar Wilde. A legendary and delicate book with a 'satanic'
portrait of the author as a frontispice and an Art Nouveau purple cover
decoration of a mournful young man wounding his fingers on a rose.
